Layover, stopover, hidden-city
A layover is the connection the airline already built, usually under 24 hours, bags checked through. You do not leave the airport in any meaningful way. A stopover is a planned extra stay in the hub, often 24 hours to 10 days, issued as part of the same ticket. Bags come off. You clear immigration. You need the entry rules of that hub, not just the final destination. Run those through the entry checker before you fall in love with the hotel photo.
Hidden-city ticketing (flying A–B–C and walking off at B) is a different trick, against most airline contracts, and a good way to lose the return coupon and the bags. This guide does not use it. The legal, bookable version is a published stopover or a multi-city itinerary the airline sold you on purpose.
The arithmetic that matters
A stopover wins when two things are true at once. The fare with the extra nights is close to, or cheaper than, the nonstop. And the hotel, food, and extra half-day of travel still cost less than a separate weekend trip to that hub. If the connecting fare is already $400 cheaper than the nonstop, adding two free nights in Lisbon is almost automatic. If the nonstop is $80 more and you only have nine days off, the extra city steals the trip you actually booked.
Add the stopover when you would have visited that hub anyway, or when the connecting fare is already the cheap one. Do not add it to "use" a 90-minute connection. That is not a stopover, that is a sprint.
Programs that actually exist
These are the ones US, UK, Canadian, and Australian travelers hit most often on the way to Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. Terms move. The links go to the airline, not to a recap blog.
Icelandair: Iceland, up to 7 nights
Icelandair's stopover page is explicit: on a transatlantic itinerary you can add a stop in Iceland for no additional airfare, up to seven nights. The hotel is not included. TAP Air Portugal: Lisbon or Porto, up to 10 days
TAP's Portugal Stopover lets you pause in Lisbon or Porto for up to 10 days on a connecting ticket, outbound or inbound, with no extra airfare on the international coupon. TAP also advertises partner discounts (including domestic Portugal fares). Bags for stays longer than 24 hours are typically checked to the stopover, not through; read TAP's own check-in notes. Turkish, Qatar, Finnair
Turkish Airlines publishes a Stopover in Istanbul program for qualifying long connections (hotel nights on some economy and business fares). Qatar Airways sells Discover Qatar hotel packages for Doha stopovers at promotional rates that change. Finnair lets you build a Helsinki stay as a multi-city itinerary with no extra airfare on many Europe–Asia and US–Europe routings. In all three cases the current length, hotel brand, and eligibility sit on the airline site, not in this paragraph.

How to search without a broken ticket
- Start on Google Flights or the airline site with multi-city: home to hub, hub to destination, with the dates you actually want on the ground.
- Compare that total to the same dates as a nonstop or a short connection. If multi-city is more than a little higher, the "free" stopover is not free.
- On Icelandair and TAP, look for the stopover control in the airline's own search, not only in Google.
- One ticket, one record locator. Two one-ways on different airlines is not a stopover program; it is two separate risks if the first flight is late.
- Bags: a stopover over 24 hours usually means you collect bags and re-check. Pack the carry-on as if the first night's shirt has to live with you.
Entry paperwork is the piece people skip. A US passport into Schengen for a TAP Lisbon pause does not need ETIAS as of August 2026. A pause in Istanbul or Doha can need an e-visa or a visa-on-arrival even when the final destination does not. Confirm the hub, not only the last city, on the visa guide.
When the nonstop wins
- Two cities for close to one airfare on Icelandair, TAP, and similar programs
- Sometimes a free or cheap hotel on Turkish or Qatar connections
- A way to see Iceland or Lisbon without buying a second trip
- Often the cheaper routing anyway on US–Europe and US–Asia
- Nine-day vacations cannot absorb a 10-day TAP pause
- Hub hotels and food can erase the airfare win
- Missed connections after a stopover are your problem in a new way: you already used the first coupon
- Immigration at the hub is a real extra step, not a lounge anecdote
If you have the days, and the multi-city total is not worse than the nonstop, take the published stopover. If you are squeezing a week, buy the nonstop and put the second city on a later trip. The booking-window guide still applies to both searches.
Frequently asked questions
The airfare is often unchanged on Icelandair (up to 7 nights) and TAP (up to 10 days in Lisbon or Porto). Hotels, food, and local transit are not free unless a specific program includes them (some Turkish and Qatar offers do). Always add those nights into the trip budget.
Use the airline site and the stopover control, or build the same dates as a multi-city search. You want one booking. Confirm bags will be tagged to the stopover city if you are staying over 24 hours.
You need whatever that hub requires, even if the final destination is visa-free. Schengen stopovers (Lisbon, Helsinki) follow Schengen rules; ETIAS is not in operation as of August 2026. Istanbul and Doha can need their own authorization. Use the entry checker.
Yes. A published stopover is a ticket the airline meant to sell. Hidden-city (getting off at the connection) violates most contracts of carriage, can void the rest of the itinerary, and often leaves bags going to the city you skipped.
Search the stopover as multi-city, compare it to the nonstop, and only keep it if the days and the hotel still fit. Icelandair and TAP are the cleanest no-extra-airfare versions for transatlantic trips.
